Olá, dear flower lover Reader,
Bouquets have always fascinated me, not just as pretty arrangements, but as tiny stories told through petals and shapes. Lately, I’ve been thinking about how we can bring that same sense of symbolism into our art practice.

The Hidden Messages Inside Bouquets
Bouquets have been symbolic for centuries. The Victorians used them as coded messages, and even today, a bouquet can evoke a sense of a tiny universe of emotion. Joy, gratitude, and hope all gathered in the palm of your hand.
One of my favorite sources of inspiration is Jessica Roux’s gorgeous book Floriography. Her illustrated bouquets are more than arrangements; they’re narratives. Each one combines flowers with meanings that build a complete message, like a whispered note in botanical form. Whenever I flip through her pages, I’m reminded of how storytelling and visual art intertwine so naturally.
This connection between storytelling and floral composition is exactly what has been shaping my own practice. When I first explored bouquets in my journals, I wasn’t thinking about meaning. I sketched shapes, experimented with flowing compositions, and later transitioned into collage bouquets, layering paper, textures, and painted florals to create bouquets that feel alive with movement and emotion. Back then, floriography wasn’t part of my process, but now I'm eager to create bouquets with intentional messages.

Creating Meaningful Bouquets
To help you begin experimenting with symbolic bouquets, here are a few simple examples you can try in your journal:
💐Bouquet of Gratitude
- Flowers: Pink roses (thankfulness), lavender (devotion), white lilies (purity)
- Message: “Thank you for your kindness”
- Art inspo: A soft pastel palette, gentle watercolor splashes, and delicate mark-making
💐Bouquet of Courage
- Flowers: Sunflowers (strength), red carnations (admiration), marigolds (passion and creativity)
- Message: “Be brave, face the challenge”
- Art inspo: Bold colors, strong lines, and textured papers for dynamic collage
💐Bouquet of Friendship
- Flowers: Yellow roses (friendship), pansies (thoughtfulness), asters (patience)
- Message: “I value our bond”
- Art inspo: Warm, sunny tones, and layered paper elements to evoke warmth and connection
As you explore these, notice how the meaning affects the colors, shapes, and movement in your bouquet. This is where the magic begins, when symbolism and creativity meet.

Bring Your Bouquet to Life Through Collage
If all this talk about symbolic bouquets is inspiring you to create your own, I have something special to share with you. I’ll be teaching a class about my layered collage bouquets inside Into the Wild – Creative Lab, a year-long mixed media membership created by artist Francisca Nunes.
In this class, you’ll learn how to put together a collage bouquet by exploring the colors, textures, and movement of a floral arrangement. You’ll study a bouquet for inspiration, create expressive paper pieces with mixed-media techniques, and assemble everything on a background that enhances the final composition. The result is a vibrant bouquet full of life and flow.
Inside the Creative Lab annual membership, you also get:
- One full mixed media project every month (the Paths)
- Four creative Cycles that follow the seasons and guide your practice
- Wild Circles, monthly live sessions where we create together
- A growing Lab Library of members-only classes and resources
- The new Premium Class Nature Alchemy included
- Next year’s Premium Class is included at no extra cost
Nature Alchemy is a new premium class opening inside the Creative Lab. It begins on December 5, and inside the class, you’ll learn about rust-dyeing, botanical impressions, stitching, collage, wax layers, and textured mixed media from teachers including Francisca Nunes, Christine Karpiak, and Michelle Cox.
If you prefer to join only the Nature Alchemy Premium Class, you can, but most students choose the Annual Membership because it provides everything in one place and allows you to create all year round. 👉 Here are the options: 🌿 Creative Lab Annual Membership – 350€ (≈ 370 USD) - Includes my class, Nature Alchemy, all monthly projects, the Lab Library, live sessions, and next year’s Premium Class. 🌸 Nature Alchemy Premium Class – 127€ (≈ 134 USD) Premium Class only. Enrollment is open until November 30, and the Lab won’t reopen until spring.

Bouquets remind us that art can hold both beauty and intention, that something as simple as a handful of flowers can say what words sometimes can’t. I hope this inspires you to explore bouquets not just as arrangements, but as stories that only you can tell.
Until next time,
